Information about the holy season

The Advent season is upon us, and Northaven Church will celebrate it in worship and other special seasonal events. As we travel through the Advent season, Mary the mother of Jesus will be our guide.

The Sunday's of Advent:
On the first Sunday of Advent, our youth presented a drama in worship that told the story of the Annunciation through the eyes of those closest to the events. We'll continue on the second Sunday of Advent, remembering "Maria, Madre de los Pobres." As we remember the poor, we'll also remember the traditional Advent theme of "Peace." Mary was champion of the poor, and her "Magnificat" is a magnificent challenge to be in solidarity with the poor, and to work for peace. Among other things, this service will feature holy communion, "Quadrahorns" (a French horn quartet), and a selection from Handel's Messiah. The third Sunday of Advent, we'll remember the traditional Advent theme of "Joy," as we remember the joy of Mary and Elizabeth in their months of expectation. Since there is nothing quite so joyful as the singing of children, our children's choir will present a short musical entitled "A Night for Dancing," by Hal Hopson. The characters are Mary, Joseph, Matthew (a shepherd boy) and a chorus of animals who have come to adore the baby Jesus. Our adult choir will sing an anthem entitled "Comfort Ye", based on the Isaiah scripture lesson. They will be accompanied by a woodwind trio. The fourth Sunday of Advent, Mary will guide us into the theme of "Love." Our Northaven Choir, Joyful Noise Orchestra, and Ringlieders Handbells will combine on this day to ring, sing, and play the carols of the season, as we count down the last few days before Christmas.

Special Handbell Concert:
Northaven Church is also pleased to be hosting a Christmas Concert by the Concert Bells of Fort Worth. The concert will be Tuesday, December 13th, at 7:30 pm in the sanctuary. Finally, no Advent season would be complete without special Christmas Eve services.

Christmas Eve Services:
We'll host two services this year, at 5:30 and 11 pm. The early service will be especially appropriate for families and children. You will enjoy the Christmas story narrated in a totally different way, complete with carols and sound effects. Children of all ages will delight in this fresh, creative telling of the Christmas Story. The late service will be an adapted service of "Lessons and Carols" with the Northaven Choir and Ringlieders Handbells. The service will conclude with the traditional singing of Silent Night and the lighting of candles.

Christmas and New Year's Day Worship:
Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, and so we'll be having a special Christmas day worship service. Open the presents, and then join us for church, as Michael Hawn leads the music for this service of Holy Communion. (There will be no Sunday School on Christmas Day), New Year's Day also falls on a Sunday, and we'll celebrate the new year with John Wesley's traditional "Covenant Renewal Service." A Methodist New Year's tradition since Wesley's time, it will a special way to bring in the first day of the year.

Amahl and the Night Visitors:
Finally, our holiday season ends in Epiphany, with a presentation of the one-act opera by Gian-Carlo Menotti, "Amahl and the Night Visitors." There will be two performances on January 15 (5 and 7 pm), The show will feature Virginia Dupuy as the mother and Truitt Davis as the shepherd boy. This timeless musical production tells the story of the three Kings who visit a poor shepherd boy and his mother on their way to find the baby Jesus, guided by the star. Directed by Robert Emery, with musical direction by Valinda Woods O'Connor. The Kings are played by Frank Stegall, John Holbert, and Nathan Myers, and the Page by Scott Jordan. Producer is Valerie Hill. Members of the Northaven Choir will play the role of the shepherd's chorus.

Alternative Giving:
The Church in Society Commission invites you to give gifts of real meaning to your family and friends this year, by making contributions to a local Dallas agency in their name. You can find the information about this program here.

Northaven also offers the chance for you to donate a Poinsettia in honor or in memory of a loved one of friend. The poinsettias will be delivered this coming Friday, and will be a part of our worship the next few weeks. We are asking for a contribution of $10 per Poinsettia to cover their cost.
