Information about Advent at Northaven Church

One of the traditional themes of Advent is Peace. And this Advent season, Northaven Church will emphasize this theme throughout the holy season. Prepare your hearts now for "A Season of Peace," as Advent is right over the horizon, just a few short weeks away now. Our Worship Guild is working hard to bring creative visual elements and symbols of peace to the sanctuary. As has become tradition, throughout the Advent season different Northaven families will take part in the lighting of the Advent wreath. This year, the congregation will welcome a "Crismon Tree" that will be displayed in the sanctuary.

Advent begins December 3rd. We will celebrate Holy Communion in our worship that morning, and begin to unpack the theme of peace. In worship that morning, we will seek to understand the role of peace in our personal lives. The choir will sing Jane Marshall’s “A Psalm of Peace” and our children will sing two advent anthems.

On the second Sunday of Advent, December 10th, our worship service will feature a creative and festive celebration of "Lessons and Carols" with the traditional nine readings from the scriptures. Children’s and adult choirs, orchestra, and handbells will all provide musical leadership.

On the third Sunday of Advent, December 17th, the Movement Choir will join the adult choir in a presentation of two movements from Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols”. Guest harpist, Nakao Stromberg, will accompany the choir and dancers.

The final Sunday of Advent is also Christmas Eve. Morning worship is at 11 a.m. Evening services are at 5 and 11 p.m. The 5 p.m. service will be a "family friendly" service, and the 11 p.m. service will feature Holy Communion and music by the Northaven choir and handbells. Both services will include many familiar and favorite Christmas carols, and both will end with the traditional lighting of the Christmas candles and "Silent Night."

During the season of Advent, our Minister of Spiritual Formation, Mary Lowrance, will offer a special Advent study. The study will be offered twice: on Sunday evenings from 5-7 pm, and on Wednesday mornings. The study will be the same in both sessions.

Northaven will again take part in an "Alternative Giving" Project, where members can make contributions to designated local charities in the name of their friends and loved ones. In return, they get a handcrafted card (from our own Joan Hogge) to give to their loved ones, letting them know that they have been remembered this Christmas by a gift that will keep giving to the greater community. Please look for more information about the Alternative Giving Project coming soon.

So, make your plans now to be present in worship throughout the Advent season, as we embark on a holy season of peace.
