Dallas Dinner Table
Pictures and Info about the event at
Northaven
By all accounts, Northaven's hosting of the Dallas
Dinner Table was a huge success. Despite the bad weather, almost 70 people came
to Northaven for the yearly event, designed to stimulate conversation between
people of different
races.
Approximately
10 Northaveners helped to host the dinner by cooking the meal, setting up the
church, and acting as greeters for our many visitors. Participants in the Dallas
Dinner Table selected to come to Northaven Church, and the vast majority of them
were not from our church, although many appeared to be neighborhood residents.
We have been told more people registered to come to Northaven for the dinner
than to any other location in
Dallas!!
There
was a wonderful mix of races at the event, and people of at least three
different religious faiths. Participants first met for an "ice breaker" in our
Atrium, where they wrestled with questions about race in Dallas County. Then,
after a prayer and greeting, they adjourned to the second floor, where they went
through a dinner buffet line, and dined in one of eight
classrooms.
The
eight dinner table groups then discussed issues of race as they shared their
meal, sharing challenging ideas, and making new friends across racial
lines.Many of the non-member
participants told us that they loved our new church building, and felt warmly
welcomed by the Northaven volunteers. Several return participants said that our
set up at Northaven was the best they had ever experienced, and complimented our
church
profusely.
Very
special thanks go to Marlene Haskell, who was our volunteer coordinator for the
entire event. And special thanks to the many Northaveners who made the night a
great one.
