Love Makes a Family
A Photo Exhibit Comes to Northaven: Feb.
6-11
Northaven will be hosting the touring photo exhibit
“Love Makes a Family: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People and
their Families” Feb. 6-11 in the church’s atrium. The show –
which will be free and open to the public – is making four stops in Texas,
including one at the State Capitol in
Austin. The
exhibit features 22 images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families of
all races from around the United States. Photographer Gigi Kaeser is the
co-founder and co-director of Family Diversity Projects, the nonprofit group
that generated the exhibit. The organization, based in Amherst, Mass., is
dedicated to developing traveling pictorial shows that celebrate diversity.
Co-founder and co-director Peggy Gillespie, an author and freelance journalist,
has gathered first-person accounts from the subjects that accompany each
image.Equality Texas Foundation is the sponsor
for the four exhibits around the state. The nonprofit organization, based in
Austin, is dedicated to educating communities about the issues facing lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender Texans and their families, as well as to advocate
for their rights.An opening reception,
which Equality Texas Foundation executive director Paul Scott is planning to
attend, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at the church. The show, which will be
located in the atrium, continues from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. on the following five
days.Volunteers are needed to be present
at the exhibit Feb. 9-10, when the church is usually closed. If you wish to
volunteer, contact Lew King, chair of the Church in Society
Commission.After Dallas, the exhibit
will travel to San Antonio (Feb. 19-25), to the State Capitol in Austin (Feb.
27-March 5), and to Houston (March
8-15).
