A Photo Exhibit Comes to Northaven: Feb. 6-11

Northaven will be hosting the touring photo exhibit “Love Makes a Family: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People and their Families” Feb. 6-11 in the church’s atrium. The show – which will be free and open to the public – is making four stops in Texas, including one at the State Capitol in Austin.

The exhibit features 22 images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families of all races from around the United States. Photographer Gigi Kaeser is the co-founder and co-director of Family Diversity Projects, the nonprofit group that generated the exhibit. The organization, based in Amherst, Mass., is dedicated to developing traveling pictorial shows that celebrate diversity. Co-founder and co-director Peggy Gillespie, an author and freelance journalist, has gathered first-person accounts from the subjects that accompany each image.
Equality Texas Foundation is the sponsor for the four exhibits around the state. The nonprofit organization, based in Austin, is dedicated to educating communities about the issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Texans and their families, as well as to advocate for their rights.

An opening reception, which Equality Texas Foundation executive director Paul Scott is planning to attend, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at the church. The show, which will be located in the atrium, continues from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. on the following five days.

Volunteers are needed to be present at the exhibit Feb. 9-10, when the church is usually closed. If you wish to volunteer, contact Lew King, chair of the Church in Society Commission.

After Dallas, the exhibit will travel to San Antonio (Feb. 19-25), to the State Capitol in Austin (Feb. 27-March 5), and to Houston (March 8-15)
