Details and Complete Holy Week Schedule

Our theme during the Lenten season has been "Return to God." What better way to culminate that season than to "return" to Northaven again and again for Holy Week services filled with the pageantry and symbolism of the season. Our Holy Week services will move, thrill, and inspire worshippers, and you will want to be a part of all of it. Unless otherwise noted, all services take place in Northaven's sanctuary:

Palm Sunday 10:55 a.m. April 1: This Sunday is Palm Sunday, and our worship will feature the traditional procession of the Palm branches with our children, children's choir, adult choir, and Joyful Noise Orchestra. The movement of this service takes into account both the "palms" and the "passion;" beginning in elation and acclamation, before turning more pensive in preparation for the week to come. The anthem, "Go to Gethsemane" will dramatically and musically bring us into the passion. Soloist Bruce Hathaway will be featured with the choir. Because this is a "first Sunday," we will also have communion as a part of our worship. (Children are invited to participate in the procession of the Palms. The children are gathering in the hall outside the church office at 10:45 am)

Maundy Thursday, 7 p.m. April 5: We will participate in a service that opens up the meaning of Holy Communion for us, as we "remember" the institution of the Last Supper. The Northaven Movement Choir will embody the words of Psalm 22, sung by tenor, Casey Carter. The Northaven Choir will sing as well as soprano soloist, Stephanie McCranie. This more meditative service will also move us right to the brink of Good Friday when the Movement Choir leads the worshippers in a ceremonial "stripping of the church."

Good Friday, 7 p.m. April 6: This year's Good Friday Tennebrae service is built around the classic "seven last words" of Jesus. Readers will not only interpret the Biblical texts, but also offer contemplative meditations to create the mood of that mournful day. The worship space itself will speak to us, as the congregation will all be seated above in the gallery sections. The choir's anthem is a beautiful and reflective interpretation of the hymn, "Ah, Holy Jesus.” Violist Ashley Kurth will accompany the choir. Soloists from the choir will lead us in other musical meditations, and the congregation will participate in hymns and Taize responses.

Holy Saturday, 5 p.m. April 7: (Atrium): Rev. Shannon Hamrick will again lead us in a Holy Saturday service of meditation and waiting. The themes of Holy Saturday include expectant waiting and contemplation, and Shannon has designed a service that will move us from the pain of Good Friday toward the joy of Easter.

Easter Sunday, 10:55 April 8: Join the entire Northaven community for the grand celebration of Easter. Our one, unified service should be a large and inspiring worship experience for all. The children will once again participate in the flowering of the cross. The sanctuary will be adorned with a variety of flowers, signifying the breaking in of "new life." The Ringlieders Handbells and a brass quintet will add to the festive nature of the service as they accompany the choir and organ in the hymns and anthems.
