Dear Friends,

The announcement about FeastFest was filled with so much information that this is one of those special weeks where we need to send you two emails just to fit it all in. Because the truth is, there is so much activity going on in the church right now, and so much that we hope you'll want to know about.

Foundations for the Christian Life: Sundays from September 16- October 7:
This discussion-oriented opportunity is for those new to our Church as well as those who have been around a long time. It will cover the basic beliefs and practices of United Methodist Christians but do so in a way that is relevant to how we live our lives today. The course will cover the four basic affirmations that give meaning to our life, what we really believe the spiritual disciplines, and the concept of calling and servanthood. We especially encourage our new members and visitors to be a part of this time, but hope that all members will seek to take advantage of this course as a refresher and time of renewal.

Singing Our Faith in the 21st Century: Recent Trends in Congregational Song.
A class with Michael Hawn: Sunday mornings, 9:30 am, on September 16, 23 and 30
Northaven is so richly blessed with the presence of Michael Hawn, and he will be teaching a special class on the next three Sunday mornings. Michael travels the world teaching churches everywhere about

Here's what Michael says about the class:
Every other generation in Christian history has had such a variety of congregational song from which to choose. What does our generation say about God, Christ, the sacraments, current social conditions, etc., that has never been sung before? This is a series for anyone who loves the hymns of the church. Musicianship is not the issue. As a friend of mine once said, the question for the Christian is not “Do you have a voice?” The question is “Do you have a song?” Come and find your song.

Habits of the Heart: Our Annual Stewardship Campaign
Our annual Fall stewardship campaign begins September 23rd, and runs on consecutive Sundays through October 14. The theme this year, "Habits of the Heart," will examine the core of our membership vows as United Methodist: to uphold the church with our "Prayers, Presence, Service, and Gifts." Each Sunday will focus on one of these themes, and feature an unpacking of these spiritual practices. A lay speaker will speak at each service, and the campaign will feature personalized cards, mailed each week, that each member is invited to bring with them each Sunday. One of the highlights of the month will be Music Ministry Sunday on September 30th. (More details on this next week...)
You should have received a preliminary letter about the campaign in the mail this week.

Matt McElyea: Northaven's New Finance Administrator
In case you missed the newsletter announcement, the church has hired a new Finance Administrator on a part time basis. Matt McElyea will hold regular office hours all day Monday and Tuesday of each week, and be available by phone at other times.

Reception for Holly Price: September 30
We can now confirm that the reception to honor Holly Price will take place on September 30th, immediately following worship. We know you'll want to be there.

Connections Band: Tribute to Carole King and James Taylor
September 22, 7 pm. Spring Valley United Methodist Church
And if you are not completely exhausted with art and music after this weekend, come hear this new tribute show to the music of Carole King and James Taylor. Connections is a band that I play in, along with six other United Methodist clergy, and a score of great lay musicians. I'll be playing and singing on many of your favorite "JT" songs. Come out and sing along with us!
Admission is free. But a "love offering" will be taken to benefit UMCOR.

Well, my my..that's more than enough for now.

See you at FeastFeast this weekend, and on Sunday morning,

Eric Folkerth
