A Call for Social
Justice
A Three Part Series on Key
Issues of Social Justice Where We
Live
Thursdays, November 1, 8,
and 15, 2007, 7:00 p.m.
at Northaven United
Methodist Church
The Committees for
Church in Society and Adult Education are sponsoring a three-part series of
presentation and discussion on key issues that we as concerned Christians need
to be aware of and respond to. The sessions
are:
November 1:
Prophetic
Witness -
led by Bill McElvaney
What does it mean for Northaven UMC to offer prophetic
witness?
We will consider:
biblical grounding
United Methodist theological/social
principles
personal experiences and lessons learned
AND discussion and
dialogue
November 8:
Green: The New Red, White
and Blue
- led by Ron
Wilhelm
This is the latest video (65 minutes)
from Interfaith Power & Light. The film presents a good overview of most of
the technologies currently being promoted as solutions to the energy crisis and
global climate change. After viewing the video, we'll engage in a discussion of
the possibilities
presented.
November
15: The Living
Wage - led by Kim
Batchelor
How can we, the members of Northaven,
live prophetically when it comes to what people are paid for the work they do?
Just wages is an important theme biblically, and this session will reflect on
the verses that call us to do justice in regard to the rights of workers. To
bring the issue to modern day, we’ll watch the brief video from the
television program “30 Days” in which Morgan Spurlock, director of
the documentary “Supersize Me,” and his fiancé spend 30 days
living on what was then the minimum wage.
If you plan to come to
these sessions, please call the Church Office
at
214-363-2479 and leave
your name and the sessions you will be
attending.
These sessions are a part
of our ongoing effort to provide meaningful opportunities through which we at
Northaven UMC can grow in spirit and
servanthood.
