Up-to-date information on Northaven's Response to Hurricane Katrina (Updated 09.13.05)

Northaven's Housing for Evacuee Family(new information as of 9.13.05)

Northaven UMC is assisting an evacuee family in setting up a new apartment in the Dallas area. This family lived through the trauma of the New Orleans Convention Center, and is now attempting to rebuild their lives in Dallas.

Ernest and Barbara are the parents, with their two adult children, Denise and Jackie. Jackie has been able to transfer to SMU (from Xavier College) for her senior year. Denise is a teacher who is currently looking for work in a Dallas area school. Denise has two children --a nine-year-old girl, and a eleven-year-old boy-- who also live with the family.

A three-bedroom apartment has been located, and the children have been enrolled in a neighborhood school. However, there are many household items needed before they can actually move into the apartment, and leave the hotel where they have been living since Katrina hit. And there are some volunteer tasks that would also be helpful in the next few days.

Here are the pressing needs for this family:
Items for the apartment:
Beds: Two twin beds. One queen bed.
Two mattresses for bunk beds (frame already at the apartment...)
Three dressers
Kitchen appliances: microwave, coffee maker, cooking utensils
Household tools:
Toys: for a nine-year-old girl and eleven-year-old boy
End tables
Side tables
Floor lamps
Bed linens
Set of towels for six people
Television
Radio/CD Player
Household plants
Vacuum Cleaner

Volunteer Need for the family:
Until they can get settled in the apartment, there is a need for the children to be driven to and from their new school.

There may also be a need for a truck and folks to move these donated items.

If you have an item to donate, contact Shannon Hamrick at: 214-526-4753, ext 207. Shannon checks her messages regularly, and if she does not answer your call, will call you back soon.

Thanks for being willing to help this family!

Northaven continues to encourage members to respond to this disaster in other ways too:

Give Generously (Options):
1. Northaven's Hurricane Fund: Northaven will collect contributions, to meet basic needs of evacuees here in Dallas. (A portion of these funds may be used to help our evacuee family...) To date, we have received over $5,000 in contributions to both our fund. Make checks payable to Northaven UMC, and please designate Katrina on the memo line. Mail to 11211 Preston Road, Dallas, TX 75230.

2. Contribute to the Dallas Red Cross: There is an immediate need for funds in the Dallas Red Cross, to provide food and other necessities for the refugees during the initial few days. You can give by going to the Dallas Red Cross Website here.

3. Contribute to the Food Bank: The North Texas Food Bank works with local and national Food Banks and Pantries. Northaven has set up a "virtual food drive" through NTFB will be providing food and water to local shelters, and will also be shipping supplies to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Please give generously through the North Texas Food Bank. To date, we have received close to $1,000 in contributions to our online food drive. Every dollar you give through our Virtual Aid Drive becomes $11 in distributed food to the hurricane victims. Click here to contribute online Northaven's Online Food Drive.

Ways to Volunteer:
1. United Methodist Hurricane Response Needs
Highland Park UMC has become a center for the collection of needed hurricane relief items. The following information comes from them:
URGENT NEEDS: Volunteers, and $25 gift cards: Walmart, Target, groceries, gas
Pillows
Sheets
Diapers, all sizes
Baby Formula
Baby food
Duffel bags
DISD school uniforms
School supplies
Baby strollers
PLEASE DO NOT DONATE USED CLOTHES AT THIS TIME!!!
Please honor the humanity of our new neighbors; all donated goods should be clean and in good condition;  Baby food and formula should be in unopened packaging.
Please bring relief items to HPUMC's Biggers Building at 5817 Hillcrest, across from the church, between 9:00 am- 4:00 pm.
Volunteers are needed to sort and deliver donated items, and host guest shoppers.

2. Health Kits are no longer needed.
Northaven members created more than 170 health kits for the evacuees. However, these items or no longer needed at this time.

3. Offer Jobs or Housing to Evacuees: There is an immediate need for both. It is very likely that many of the persons coming to Dallas may never return to their cities, or may be here in Dallas for an extended period of time. The City is looking to compile a master list of persons who have jobs or housing that they can offer to persons. (The period of time to be determined by you). The church volunteers at the Convention Center will attempt to match that information with the needs. If you have jobs or housing that you can offer a family, email Northaven here.

4. Volunteer your van and you as a driver: (NEW REQUEST) We have been told that there will be an urgent need for vans and drivers to get people around the city to appointments with various Dallas area agencies. If you can volunteer with this, call Eric at the church: 214-363-2479

For the latest updates on needs and opportunities, please continue to check this web page often.

Please continue to pray not only for the recovery of the Gulf States, but also for the many weary travelers who will soon in our city.
