Katrina Relief Update
An update on Northaven's Response to
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina continues to be a major event,
not only in the life of our nation, but also in our city too. Northaven members
have been incredibly generous and incredibly active in their response to the
hurricane thus far.This past week,
members and friends of Northaven helped to resettle an evacuee family in a
rental home in East Dallas. Members donated beds, furniture, televisions,
kitchen items, etc, in an effort to bring some sense of normalcy back to the
life of this family. Many thanks to Northavener Shannon Hamrick who led this
effort, and first found the the family at Reunion Arena, while doing relief work
there.The grandchildren of the family
are now attending school at Dan D Rogers Elementary. One of the children is
finishing her senior year at SMU (transfered from Xavier in LA). The other
family members are working to rebuild their lives in Dallas. Shannon reports
that they are extremely grateful for the love and care they have felt from the
Northaven community thus far.The
Convention Center has now been shut down as a center for helping the evacuees.
But, during the two weeks of its operation, over 20 Northavener volunteered
there, attempting to bring aid, comfort, and information to the evacuees.
Although it was, at times, a chaotic scene, Northaveners managed to bring a
sense of calm and peace to those shell-schocked evacuees they encountered
there.Northaven members have also been
quite generous financially. We have received more than $6,000 to our own
Northaven Katrina fund. Much of these funds will go to aid the evacuees right
here in Dallas County, including the family that we've helped
relocate.Almost $2,000 in additional
money has been contributed to the North Texas Food Bank, via our "online food
drive." Every dollar given to the Food Bank helps them buy $11 dollars worth of
food. So, this donation has multiplied into a gift of $22,000 dollars in food to
the needy who have been affected by
Katrina. Then, there are the "in kind"
donations to resettle our new friends in their new home, and those contributions
likely run to several thousand dollars of
aid.Our efforts will continue. And the
best, and most up-to-date, information on what you can do to help can always be
found right
here.Additionally, we have set
up a place on our church's blog for our members to theologize about the meaning
of the Hurricane for our lives, and to share their stories of what they have
done to help. Please add your voice to
the conversation by clicking here and sharing your "Comment" in the comments
section. While there is much still to be
done, and much pain to heal in this tragedy, it is a blessing to be in a church
where its members respond in ACTION at a time like this. Thanks be to God for
the chance to serve God and the world through the church!
