The Northaven United
Methodist Church
Human
Development Fund 2007 Grants
This year marks the 37th
year the people of Northaven United Methodist Church have made Human Development
Fund donations to address the critical needs of Dallas and
beyond.
To qualify for a
Human Development Fund grant, the requesting agency must be a non-profit, be an
organization preferably connected to a member of Northaven or the United
Methodist Church, which addresses the issues of poverty, education, justice,
medical needs and/or special population, preferably be located in the Dallas
area (although some national and international gifts are considered), and be an
agency or organization that can show sustained support from other sources beyond
Northaven.
In February the committee reviewed 39
applications and made recommendations to fund 24. This year through the
generosity of Human Development Fund donors the total funding commitment was
$41,000. The 2007 recipients are:
Art Spirit, Inc.
$1,000 for art supplies for outreach programs
for women This Dallas based agency is a mission to artists and art lovers who
access God through the arts.
Camaroon Hymnal Initiative.
$1,000 for Phase IV of the initiative. The
purpose of the initiative that is headed by Rev. John Thornburg is to produce
the first hymnal for the Cameroon United Methodist Church.
Christ’s Foundry - La
Fundicion de Cristo. $3,000 for support of a
Director of After School Programs. Christ’s Foundry is an UMC outreach
ministry in the Bachman Lake
area.
Community Partners.
$1,500 for a worker for next Christmas’
toy drive. Community Partners of Dallas is a non-profit agency that advocates
for Child Protective Services and provides resources for caseworkers to help
children and families.
Dallas
Bethlehem Center. $1,000 for updating the
computer lab and software. This Methodist organization is dedicated to
providing the children of South Dallas with a positive environment for growth,
regardless of their economic status or family
situation.
Dallas Haiti Project.
$500 for food for students at Ecole St. Pierre.
Dallas-Haiti Project is a dedicated to improving the lives of people living in
Haiti by gathering and distributing resources available to us here in our own
community to provide humanitarian aid, education and health care to people in
need.
Dallas Peace Center.
$2,000 for peace and justice programs and
services. Dallas Peace Center is a non-profit interfaith organization
dedicated to peace education, research and
action.
Human Rights Initiative.
$1,000 for client
services.
The mission of Human Rights Initiative of North Texas (HRI) is to provide free
legal representation and social services to the most marginalized victims of
human rights abuses and to serve as a community resource on international human
rights issues. HRI also assists immigrants with special abuse issues, such as
women and children victims of domestic violence. HRI also assists immigrants and
refugees in their struggles to make the necessary lifestyle, cultural and social
adjustments after experiencing trauma and
loss.
Huisisliapa.
$500 for continued support of construction of a
community workshop, and machinery and equipment for its artisan cooperative.
Huisisliapa is a community founded when Salvadoran refugees returned to resettle
in El Salvador after the peace agreements were signed in
1992.
Interfaith Action
International. $1,500 for the San Juan
Methodist Church Conversion Project. The Project, led by JoAn Dwyer, is the
conversion of an abandoned Methodist church (in San Juan la Laguna, Solola,
Guatemala) into a medical/dental clinic and multi-purpose
community building. This is an approved project of the National
Methodist Church of Guatemala. Medical/dental teams from the
United States will help support medical care in San Juan and surrounding
villages. Northaven is planning to send a team to assist with the conversion
project in early 2008.
Interfaith Housing Coalition
$1,000 for support of Resident Services
Programs. Interfaith Housing is a ministry to Dallas-area homeless
families.
Junior Players.
$1,000 for administrative costs for the after
school and summer arts education programs. Junior Players is an innovative
Dallas based arts agency that teaches theatrical skills and self-esteem to youth
in underprivileged
situations.
Maria Madre de los
Pobres. $2,500 for support of parish programs at
our sister church in El Salvador. The church serves to bring the gospel to a
densely populated and intensely poor community on the outskirts of the city of
San Salvador.
Methodism’s
Breadbasket. $500 for emergency food relief.
As a mission of the North Texas Conference of United Methodist Churches,
Methodism's Breadbasket has over a 35 year heritage of providing emergency food
relief.
New Beginning Center.
$1,000 for agency services in the prevention of
and recovery from domestic violence. New Beginning is a counseling service
residential program for abused women located in
Garland.
Newborns in Need.
$1,000 for fabric for sleepers, hats, quilts,
booties and receiving blankets. This agency’s Dallas chapter provides
warm bedding and clothing to premature and newborn children, primarily to
Parkland Hospital.
North Dallas
Shared Ministries. $7,500 for our
church’s yearly commitment to the programs and services of the NDSM. The
Ministry has moved into new quarters and has a new clinic in addition to
emergency food, clothing and aid for people in need.
Northaven UMC Pastor
Discretionary Fund. $2,000 to provide our
minister with discretionary monies used to help people in
need.
Northaven UMC Mission Fund.
$3,000 for scholarships for Northaven member who
need assistance to participate in Northaven mission trips. Interested members
should contact Eric
Folkerth.
Northaven UMC Youth.
$1,000 for supplies needed for the summer 2007
mission trip.
Open Door
Pre-School. $1,000 for scholarships. Open Door
is a non-profit school at Grace United Methodist Church in East Dallas. It
provides early childhood education and parenting skills to adults in the
multi-ethic neighborhood around the church.
Parkland Health and
Hospital’s Pastoral Care Department.
$2,500 for support of a Hispanic chaplain in the
Senior House Calls Program. This Parkland Hospital department provides
spiritual care and support to patients and their families who are suffering
through tragedy, trauma and life-altering illnesses.
Perkins Youth School of Theology
$1,000 for support for the Spring Youth Forum.
The Perkins Youth School , the only program of its kind in a seven state area,
helps youth who want to serve their churches and communities realize their
calling, despite special issues in their
lives.
Project Transformation.
$3,000 for scholarships for the summer intern
program. This Dallas based agency is a grassroots, faith based that provides
socially conscious leadership training and ministry exploration for college
students and social and spiritual programs for youth living in low income urban
neighborhoods.
