Getting Ready for General Conference
February 16, 9:30-3:30
Have you heard of the Institute of Religion and
Democracy
(IRD)? Since its beginning in 1982,
the IRD has continuously
undermined the United
Methodist Church and other mainline
Protestant
denominations by attacking the character of
church
leaders. This organization, funded by
some very powerful
foundations, undermines the
witness of the church by fueling
controversy to
its own benefit. To learn more about
the
IRD’s tactics, intent, and
propaganda, especially in relation
to the 2008
General Conference meeting in April, come to
a
presentation on Saturday, February 16, at
Northaven, from
9:30 am to 3:30
pm.
Rev. Andrew Weaver, Ph.D., a research
psychologist and UM
minister, will speak and
show a 25-minute video, Renewal
or Ruin? The
IRD’s Attack on the United Methodist
Church,
produced and directed by Rev. Steven
Martin. A question and
answer period will
follow with Andrew Weaver and Steven
Martin.
After lunch, Rev. Troy Plummer, executive director
of
Reconciling Ministries, and Rev. Tiffany
Steinwert, pastor of
Cambridge Welcoming
Ministries, will speak on
“Reconciling
Strategies for General
Conference.” Registration forms can
be
found in the atrium, or you may register by calling
Peggy
Moore, (metro) 817-268-3615 and pay at
the door. Fifteen
dollars will cover the
day’s expenses, including
lunch.
Reconciling United Methodists from
Central Texas and North
Texas Conferences are
presenting this event; all are invited
to
attend.
