Shannon Hamrick
To be ordained deacon in the United
Methodist Church
Yesterday afternoon, our own Shannon Hamrick got
the good news that she has been approved for ordination as a Deacon in Full
Connection the United Methodist Church.
The United Methodist Church has two
"orders" of ordained ministry: deacon and elder. Deacons are ordained to "Word,
Service and Order," and Elders are ordained to "Word, Sacrament, and Order." At
our church, for example, Christina Hildebrand is also a Deacon in Full
Connection. Eric Folkerth is an Elder in Full
Connection.
Deacons often serve both an
"appointment" in the world and in the church. (For example, Karan Marshall, also
a Deacon in Full Connection at Northaven, is dually appointed to both Eastfield
College and Northaven). Shannon's appointment has been to the Pastoral
Counseling Center and Northaven. And she serves both places with great
distinction. Her paid position at the Counseling Center is as a therapist
treating clients for a variety of personal and psychological
issues.
The ordination process in the
United Methodist Church is extremely long and involved. It not only involves
going to seminary for a full seminary degree (a three to four year process) but
also a probationary period that can last three additional years following
seminary. So, this news today is a significant milestone in Shannon's life, a
great accomplishment for her, and a great source of pride for all of us here at
Northaven.
Shannon's ordination will be
as a part of our annual North Texas Annual Conference meeting, in early
June....specifically, Tuesday night, June 6th. We will publicize the details as
the date draws closer.
Congratulations,
Shannon!
