Mark Chancey
A new study on how the Bible is taught in
schools throughout Texas
Mark Chancy is the author of a new study entitled
"Reading, Writing and Religion: Teaching
the Bible in Texas Public Schools." This study
is one of the first of its kind and seeks to evaluate the Bible courses that are
offered in many school districts around the
state. Many of you will remember how Mark
Chancy authored a study on a specific Bible curriculum last year, and how
Northaven Church sponsored an event with the Texas Freedom Network to report on
those findings.The current study expands
far beyond the one Bible curriculum, and analyzes what districts throughout the
state are teaching, who is teaching it, and whether or not the Bible courses
meet even basic levels of academic and non-ideological rigor. The study found
that:"with
a few notable exceptions, the Bible courses currently taught in Texas public
schools often fail to meet even minimal academic standards for teacher
qualifications, curriculum and academic rigor; promote one faith perspective
over all others; and push an ideological
agenda."You can read the entire study here.
The study was sponsored by the Texas
Freedom Network, and it is once again getting coverage in the media. Here is a
story
about it that recently ran in the Fort Worth
Star Telegram.Congratulations to Mark
Chancey for again providing such a valuable service to the people of
Texas.
