50-Years of Faith
An introduction to Northaven's 50-year
celebration
What a great birthday party we had on September 11!
Ice cream and cake went quickly as we sang familiar songs, led by Ed Upton.
Mark Chancey was an entertaining and thoughtful speaker with a relevant message
and kind words about Northaven.
But
the celebration doesn’t end with that one event. We have great plans for
the coming year as we remember the past 50 years and move into our new sanctuary
and education building. We have been
working on a time line of Northaven’s 50 years of community and faith.
Some of our “longtimers” have been serving as our advisory committee
in recalling our past and putting it in perspective. We’ve been digging
through pictures and slides, gathering data, and making plans for scrapbooks to
be assembled. The Theological Threads have been working with Julie Hofmeister
to produce a visionary banner of her 50th Anniversary logo which is
being used this year on the newsletter. Travis Jordan has offered to work with
Dotti Timmins on developing CD slideshows of church members and events.
Along with those activities, we have an
entire year of special tributes in our new space. Michael Hawn will lead World
Communion Sunday on Oct. 2 in our temporary space. Then we move to the new
building on Oct. 28. You won’t want to miss our procession that day. In
November, we will have the “dressing of the Church” with the hanging
of banners and a Movement Choir performance. The following week we are
celebrating in song with a hymn festival led by Michael Hawn and John Thornburg.
In the New Year we will "Bless the
Organ" and celebrate the official consecration service for the new sanctuary.
Bells, orchestral ensembles, and our choir will be a part of these special
services. January will include two performances of “Amahl and the Night
Visitors” with an all-star cast. Through the year there will be preaching
by some of ourprevious ministers, along with
other special guests. And, of course, the year wouldn’t be complete if we
didn’t have Virginia Dupuy and Michael Hawn in concert in the
Spring.During the year we will highlight
special moments of our history to honor and give thanks for the life of this
church. As Alicia Dean wrote in her beautiful litany for the September 11
service, we give thanks for Fifty years of
prophetic vision
Lives of saints who were willing to stand up for those
who could not stand up for
themselves
Wisdom of saints who chose to oppose war and
hunger
Saints whose hearts were called to action and became
the face of Christ to this
neighborhood and our city
Richness of
fellowship…
Fifty years of a generous
and loving
community…
We
will end this 50th year celebration when we again come together for
the Feast of the Beginnings in September, 2006.
