Northaven offers a number of opportunities to enrich the community by engaging its members in meaningful activity. You are encouraged to participate in some of the following experiences:
Dinner for 8
Started in 1995, Northaven now has a number of small groups called "Dinner for 8" that gather for the warmth and hospitality that help build a sense of community. These dinner groups simply give Northaven people the opportunity to know each other at a deeper level. How does it work?
- They are dinner groups of about 8-10 people that meet once a month.
- The purpose is that members of the church can meet one another in an informal setting and enjoy food and fellowship.
- The groups meet at a different home each month.
- The menu is light and easy to prepare; a meal like you would prepare any evening for yourself or your family; not company fare.
- Sign-ups for the groups happens twice a year, in the spring and the fall. Sign-up sheets can be found in the atrium. Please try to sign up on a sheet that has some names you don't know.
- The groups meet for 2 hours, usually from 6:30 until 8:30 on Sunday evening.
Women's Book Study Group
The Women’s Book Study Group of Northaven UMC meets on second Tuesdays monthly (except July and August) at 9:30 - 11:30 am in the homes of members, followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant. Books for a year are chosen at the June meeting from recommendations of members. They represent a wide range of types and topics. Monthly discussions are usually led by members. Occasionally a local author is chosen, and that author invited to participate in discussion.
This group is Northaven UMC’s organized unit of United Methodist Women. We fulfill the purpose of United Methodist Women through our choice of books, which helps us to know God, to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission. Financial contributions are made regularly to the Women’s Division of the United Methodist Church through the Dallas-Denton District of UMW, and to Wesley Rankin Community Center, Dallas Bethlehem Center, and the Women’s Auxiliary of C.C. Young Retirement Center. Members participate in Dallas-Denton District and North Texas Conference events.
Evening Coed Book Club
The Evening Coed Book Club of Northaven United Methodist Church meets on the first Thursday of each month (with exceptions) at 6:30 pm for a pot luck supper and book review at different members' homes. There is no requirement that every member has to have a meeting in his or her home. The member suggesting that we read a specific book usually gives the book review. A wide variety of books are presented.
Men's Group
One of the results of Northaven's continuing effort to break down the barriers that exist between straight and gay people is the formation of a men's group that includes both straight and gay men. It was started in March of 1997. It meets on the second Monday night of each month for refreshments, conversation, dinner, and a program.
