Northaven attempts to minister to those outside as well as inside the community. This work is coordinated by the Program Council, and members are urged to claim their role as "ministers of the church" by participating in one or more of the following opportunities. To volunteer, call the church at 214-363-2479. Church in Society Commission Provides discussion and action about how to engage the energy of the congregation to make our community more peaceful, more whole and more just. Encouraging the congregation to be generous with their time and money. Discerning the places that time and money can best be spent. Task: Attend periodic meetings of the commission; be prepared to visit one or more of the agencies supported by the Human Development Fund in order to keep the church well connected; recruit volunteers for mission opportunities. Communications Commission Recognizes the value of building and maintaining a strong sense of community. In an effort to help bring this about at Northaven the commission seeks to assess and implement contemporary, effective methods of communication within and beyond our walls. Task: Attend periodic meetings and be willing to assist with specific communications responsibilities such as the newsletter, world wide web site, tape ministry, email discussion groups, and public relations. Education Commission Meets regularly to stimulate knowledge and growth in the faith of the community by offering seminars, workshops, fellowship opportunities, and children's activities. Task: Attend quarterly meetings; think strategically about the educational life of the community; be willing to assist with activities for all age levels that foster spiritual growth. Events Commission Seeks to help the members of the church experience the joy of being in community through a variety of gatherings, including suppers, arts gatherings, films, trips, etc., and to conceive of events that will attract people to the Northaven community. Task: Attend periodic meetings with thinking caps on and then help organize the events. Membership Commission Decides how to interest people in the community to consider Northaven as their church home. Offering hospitality to new visitors. Overseeing the membership preparation process. (Caring for people from the moment they decide to visit Northaven for the first time until the day they join.) Task: Attend periodic meetings; be prepared to telephone first-time visitors just to welcome, to chat about the life of the church, and to answer questions they may have; think strategically about how to attract people to Northaven and put the plans in effect. Worship & Arts Commission One of the most innovative and exciting groups at Northaven, this commission is responsible for working with the staff to envision and implement the variety of worship experiences offered every year. From weekly worship to prayer and healing services, Northaven has become a place where worship moves beyond the ordinary to the profound, touching the lives of children, youth, and adults. Northaven
