For Our Visitors
Welcome to Northaven United Methodist Church!
Northaven United Methodist Church is a vibrant, progressive—and growing—congregation with a deep commitment to the Christian values of love, peace, and justice. That means extending hospitality to all. It means nurturing a community of faith that reflects our world’s awesome diversity. It also means taking a stand in the face of the prejudice and bigotry that pervades our world.
Our mission statement reads: Because we believe that God’s love in Jesus Christ has broken down the walls that divide us, we seek to embody that love in our congregation and welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and economic circumstances.
We hope you will take time to explore the many avenues that Northaven offers to worship, serve, and grow, and we look forward to you visiting our community of faith. You are always welcome!
Worship
We are glad you want to experience our community of faith. Our Sunday classes start at 9.30 a.m. Our worship service is held at 11:00 a.m. each Sunday. Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month. All are welcome to participate, including children, regardless of denominational affiliation.
What can a visitor expect at Northaven?
Each Sunday morning, you can join a vibrant and progressive congregation for thought-provoking preaching, inspirational music, praise, and reflection. At Northaven, the joyful worship of God by all people—regardless of differences—is the central focus of congregational life.
In worship you’ll notice an emphasis on congregational participation. Adults and youth read Scripture and lead us in prayer, and an important part of the service is the children’s sermon. For our youngest members, a professionally staffed nursery is provided.
Many of our members share their creative gifts either by singing in our choirs, playing hand bells, or playing in our orchestra, or participating in our liturgical dance group. We also devote a portion of our service to communal prayer, which allows anyone to lift up a joy or concern.
At Northaven, visitors can expect to find a church steeped in social involvement. Since our founding in 1955, Northaven has been a distinctive congregational voice in Dallas. We invite you to listen to recently recorded sermons.
Serving
We at Northaven are committed to offering our time, talents, and financial resources in service to our Creator, and you’ll find abundant opportunities for sharing your own gifts.
The church is actively involved in many ministries that address a variety of issues and needs in our community and world. Among the United Methodist inner city projects we support locally are Amigos Days, a volunteer effort to repair homes in need, and Project Transformation, a free summer day camp that relies on volunteers reading and tutoring.
Internationally, Northaven teams travel annually to volunteer at two church-supported missions: a parish in El Salvador with a calling to community outreach and a health care project in Guatemala directed by two of our members.
Over and above stewardship giving, many members donate to the Human Development Fund, which provides support to selected ministries that represent community concerns.
Additionally, our Church in Society Commission helps identify even more opportunities to engage in issues, events, and volunteer activities that reflect our Christian values.
Northaven also has a rich tradition of service through the arts, and if you have any creative ability, we want to offer you a way to express it.
Our adult choir regularly leads in worship; anyone who loves to sing is welcome. If you can play a musical instrument, our orchestra provides music for worship on an occasional basis. And our hand bell choir welcomes anyone with experience as a ringer. There is also a children’s choir for kindergarten through sixth-grade.
If you are interested in expressing your faith through dance, a professionally trained volunteer leads our movement choir. If your talent is design or sewing, you may be interested in our group devoted to creating the altar cloths, sanctuary banners, and choir and clergy stoles.

Child Care
Our youngest visitors are welcome at worship. We also provide a professionally staffed nursery located on the first floor. The nursery is open on Sundays from 9.30 a.m. to the end of the service.
Books and soft toys are available for children to use during the worship service. They can be picked up at the table in the upper gallery of the sanctuary, just inside the door, near the library.
Becoming a Member
You are invited to join Northaven United Methodist Church at the close of any worship service, except the first Sunday of each month, which is Communion Sunday. The “Ritual of New Membership” is printed on the inside cover of our hymnal.
We ask members to continue to grow spiritually, to support our children, and to support our Church through their prayers, presence, gifts, and service.
What else is required besides the membership vows?
It is never required that a member of another Christian Church be rebaptized or attend a confirmation class in order to join Northaven; however, we strongly encourage all new members to take our four-week new member classes either before or after joining. Our senior pastor visits with all new members. New member classes are not required prior to you joining.
What if I am not a church member and not baptized?
We are honored to help adults receive baptism, which is a requirement for church membership. We do schedule adult baptisms and ask those seeking baptism to meet first with our senior pastor about its meaning and nature. Once baptized, a person may join Northaven by profession of faith.
What if I am a member of another United Methodist Church?
We can receive you on any of the designated Sundays. It is not necessary for you to contact your former church ahead of time. Our church office will do that for you after you join.
What if I am a member of another Christian denomination?
We can receive you on any of the designated Sundays. It is not necessary to be rebaptized in order to be received as a member from another denomination, but you will be asked to affirm the vows of church membership as printed in the back of our hymnal.
