Amigos Days offers an opportunity for you to engage in hands-on, local mission work and has become a cornerstone of our North Texas Conference’s connectional growth.
It is a strong encouragement to witness, once again, that the UMC outreach tradition continues to thrive with our people willing to cheerfully give their weekends to help others. Amigos veterans have often said the dirtier they get, the closer to God they feel. God’s presence is very real during every hour of the workday. What a joy to express our gratitude to God by giving of ourselves to others!
Amigos Days will be held on April 21-22 & April 28-29, 2017.
For more information, contact Brenda Smith at AmigosDays@northaven.org.
Get ready Northaven volunteers! Amigos Days work dates are set for April 21 and 22, and April 28 and 29. Please put those dates on your calendars and put this local mission opportunity in your hearts.
Amigos Days is a hands-on ministry of the United Methodist Church and People Helping People (a City of Dallas Housing Revitalization program). We partner with inner-city United Methodist host churches to repair and restore homes in order to make a positive difference in their neighborhoods. The homeowners are generally elderly or have impairments that keep them from being able to finance or participate in the needed repairs. Many of these homes are also in violation of Dallas City Codes. (More information is available here.)
To date, Amigos Days and People Helping People have partnered to repair 446 homes. Northaven has been a big part of that success!
Everyone that wants to participate can find a task that matches their talents and willingness, I assure you. With Ben and Cy around to teach, you will definitely be in good hands. Generally, the work involves scraping and painting, siding installation, some teardown and debris removal.
Work days are from 9:00 to 4:00 each of the four days, however, I take whatever commitment you are willing to give — partial days, all day or multiple days.
• We have fun!
• Meet other UMC volunteers and get to know each other!
• Learn new skills!
• We’ll step outside our church zip codes and allow ourselves to be in community with others.
• Develop relationships with the homeowners which continues in person and/or in prayer.
Sign-up sheets are on the Welcome table in the church Atrium or email Brenda Smith at AmigosDays@northaven.org. It takes about 20-25 volunteers per day to achieve our goals in the four days set aside for this effort, but I hope to sign-up more when at all possible. Please consider being a part of this local mission often as a good way to Rethink Church.
About this year’s project:
Our homeowner this year is Ms. Ernestine Williams. We walked around the house and put eyes on the listed repairs, which gives us an idea of the actual difficulty and size of the project. As usual, we left with the impression that “yes, this can be done and we need a solid group of volunteers over the two weekends!”
Ms. Williams told us that she has lived in this house for over 30 years and that the house was built about one hundred years ago. She raised her children and a couple of grandchildren here. She now has nine great-grandchildren. It is often the relationships that are just as important as the work.
We hope that you will consider signing up to help us work on the house, get to know Ms. Ernestine Williams, and hopefully get to know people who are joining us from other Reconciling Congregations. To date, Kessler Park and Lakewood UMC’s are providing volunteers, and we are hoping that another couple of Reconciling churches will join us.
